Monty was eating Urinary dry and wet food from brands Royal Canin and Katovit for his sensitive bladder. However, we had to change his diet completely when we found out about Monty's beginning kidney issues. This diet is called Renal and is both wet and dry food from Royal Canin.
Have you ever checked the ingredient lists on the back of your cats food? Do they contain sugar? I am not here to tell you what you should feed your cat, but I highly suggest (like any vet would do) not to give your cat any sugar, at least not in their main food. Ask yourself this, what would my cat eat in nature? Mouse, birds, insects etc. Not sugar! Sugar makes your blood sugar rise like crazy and then makes you go all tired again. That is how your day goes when you constantly eat sugar in the rare form, and cats don't need that! It can mess up their blood sugar, make them overweight and even get diabetes. I bet you want to go check out the ingredient list on your cat food right now, am I right? :) Just go, I'll stay here...
What's up with wheat in cat food? I was of the understanding that cat food shouldn't contain wheat as well as sugar. I asked Monty's vet about it, since there is wheat in Royal Canin Renal. She gave me this answer: "Cats eat mice, mice eat wheat!" And that was good enough for me. :)
Water is one of the most important things for your cat's health. However, many cats don’t drink enough water. Wet food contains a lot of water, just like there is water in meat and meat is what cats would and will eat in nature. Water is good for you and also good for your cat(s). If your cat doesn't like wet food, you can try adding water to your cat’s dry food to increase its moisture content. You may need to start slowly — adding only a little bit of water at first and then gradually increasing as your cat becomes accustomed to the change. Never try to force your cat to change diet! Go slow and remember that a cat that refuses to eat for any reason can develop a serious liver complication known as fatty liver disease. So again, go slow..
Dry food is also good for your cat because they get to use their teeth a little bit when (or if) they chew their food. If your cat doesn't like to chew his/her food, gently look at the gum to see if how his gum looks. If it's really red or even bleeding, you need to make an appointment with the vet to get it checked out. Many cats suffer in silence so it is really important to check the teeth and gums.
Monty went to visit his dentist a couple of months ago and on an xray the vet could see that two of his front teeth had to go. He was actually in pain, but he didn't tell us...
My little tooth
I know I must sound like a crazy concerned cat-dad, but better safe than sorry! You want your cat to have a good painfree life, right? :)
So tell me in the comment section, what do you feed your cat(s)?

My cat is obsessed with food – when I adopted him he was 12.75 kilos! I had him on a prescription diet for a few years and now I feel him either Canagan or Vigor & Sage. (Kibble) both of these brands put focus on high quality meat and ingredients. They’re both around 88% protein/12%carbs and grain-free. My cat is able to eat 80 grams a day without gaining weight so he’s happy. His coat is extremely silky and I’ve noticed his poo is healthier looking and doesn’t smell much. So I’m very happy and he’s now 14 and a comfortable 6 kilo now. (He’s a big cat so any less and he gets bony)
I feed my boys impy and khan royal canin pure feline dry impy eats anything but this cat food is only one khan will eat no other but favourite of both especially khan is tuna fish in water human tuna fish they love it shirley
I also would recommend never giving your pets food made in China. The standards are not the same. As we saw a few years ago when so many people lost their beloved cats and dogs from food made in China. I hope that never happens again. Look into where your pets food is made. You may have to email the company. But our animals are worth getting the healthiest food for all the love they give us without condition. They rely on us. Love you Monty!
It’s true any cat food in a grocery store are not the best for pets. I thought Iams was good until I did some research and read the label. Dick Van Patten (actor) was a huge animal lover and activist and created his own pet food called Natural Balance. Every batch is tested in a $800,000 lab they built just for this reason and to research healthy foods. They also make food for zoological animals. Yes brands like this and Royal Canin are more expensive, but because there are no fillers your pets eat less, and in turn use the litter box less. So the price balances out in purchasing less cat food and less cat litter. And also healthy food prevents costly trips to the vet. Male cats are especially prone to getting urinary crystals so lots of water, even poured onto dry food is very important. My one cat likes to drink out of the sink, which leads to kitty paw prints on my hardwood floors! But its’ worth it to keep them healthy and happy. I believe Royal Canin is the best food for pets, but my cats don’t like it. An ounce of prevention prevents a pound of cure. Much love to all other pet parents out there!
Hi Monty and Montys parents.
I have two fur babies… Both rescues. I was giving them Purina indoor formula but McGee my 10 year old tuxedo started leaving me presents of hairballs everyday so i changed to Iams indoor/ hairball formula and he loves it and hasnt left me any more presents…. He also does not groom frantically as he did but his coat is beautiful. Pixie a little 5 year old all white foundling loves it as well. They share a can of wet food in the morning… Pate only. And if i get busy doing something else they let me know!
Hi Monty! My 2 black furry beauties refuse to eat nearly all cat food! We feed them white fish and there is always a bowl of dried food available to them, though Molly won’t eat it, no matter what brand I put down! They both also love their treats and we get through a couple of packs a day. The vets have said they’re both healthy and their diet is fine, just be a bit easy on the treats. I think I have the 2 fussiest cats going as they also won’t eat chicken (Benjy will eat it raw) either, though they do love tuna which is reserved as a treat ?
Hi Monty, and parents! I feed my fur babies Royal Canin as well. They’re 13(male) and almost 2 years old(female). They get a mixture of Weight Management and Dental, both dry. I’ve never had any issues with lack of drinking (thankfully), which is part of why I never give wet food. Also, my older boy has always had a sensitive system, and these foods are among the few he won’t vomit from (aside from eating too fast, cause he’s a piggy!!).
Im happy to say my older boy has only had one bladder infection in his life, and it was stress related from moving.
One of my cats eats Royal Canin SO canned for his urinary issue. He is doing very well. The other four eat Hills Adult Hairball Light dry. They all are pretty good drinkers. They have a water fountain.
Hi Monty and your mum and dad. I’m loving your blogs. Thank you ? I feed my fur kids mostly wet food with dry food for a treat and also fresh protein, chicken, turkey and fish. One of my fur kids Tiggy has diabetes, he is 11 now and has had the diabetes for two years. We have to inject him twice a day with human insulin to keep his blood levels right. He copes really well with the injections and is such a lovely boy. The vet told us to feed him the protein which he loves and only a very limited amount of dried food as it contains carbs. Stay well Monty. xxx
I have used Iams dry food for years, but after Duster at age 13 started having some very minor digestive issues, we switched to Blue Wilderness Chicken Recipe for Adult Indoor Cats and he is doing fantastic. He loves it, but he is never picky about his food. He has always drunk plenty of water. Blood work done before we switched showed that he was in excellent health.
I feed my cats both dry food and wet food. I put their dry food in a bowl and they can come and go and eat as they please. At about 5 pm, I give them their wet food. For dry food, I do feed them Taste of the Wild (whick you can get at the pet store). For. wet food, I usually feed them Fussy Cat from the pet store. I admit, I do let my cats have a can of Fancy Feast or Meow Mix for wet food.
Hey Monty
We are two kitties who are BIG fans of yours and our mama shows us your pictures and videos. But, dry food is never, ever good for cats and it does not help clean teeth. Most dry foods contain way too many carbohydrates and is a primary cause of diabetes in cats. Canned food is a much better option for the water content but many canned foods are made of questionable ingredients. Our mama makes us raw food using EZ Complete supplement so it is balanced and we LOVE it!!!! It’s so easy for her to make and we feel like we are eating little mousies. It’s not as low in phosphorus as your renal diet but it is lower in phosphorus than most commercial canned food or even commercial raw food but what our mama likes is that we are getting a high quality diet with tons of great nutrition which is important for every kitty and especially kitties with renal issues. We love you, Monty!!
Your vets argument about wheat is non sequitur. When a mouse eats the wheat, his digestive system has started digesting the vegetable matter. When the cat eats the mouse, he is eating pretty much pre-digested wheat. Cats can’t otherwise digest vegetable matter.
Hi Sweet Monty….and of course Monty’s parents!
I feed my precious boy Lloyd canned food only. I give him several different kinds. Purine Pro plan urinary health. I also give him science diet. I only give Lloyd wet food, because last October he became blocked. I’ve had cats my whole life and never ever had one that this happened too. He spent 2 nights in the hospital. His vet suggested I feed him an all canned diet. He’s doing very well. He’s 4 years old, and full of energy.
I asked his vet why this happened, she said it’s fairly common common in large neutered male cats. It can also happen if they are not drinking the proper amount of water. So now he gets 3 3ounce cans of wet food a day. I’m happy too say he’s been doing great. I love you sweet Monty❤️❤️
Dear Michael and Monty
It is always a pleasure to get news from you! And thank you for shareing information with us!
We have actually 2 British Shorthait boys and are looking for a Chartreux girl to complete the family ? About catfood we feed always both – wet and dry food – we have now 20 years of experiance as cat parents and the mix with dry and wet food seams the best for them. As dry food we have also royal canin and for the wet food we take a mix of applaws thuna or chicken with a “normal” catfood named Cachet. Nevertheless I think the regular vet checks are important too as you suggested.
You are a great team and I’m looking forward to the upcoming posts!

I only feed my kitties wet food. Nature’s Variety, Soulistic (made exclusively for Petco by Weruva) and sometimes Tiki Cat. As treats, i give them Pure Bites and Greenies although i don’t love Greenies because even though it’s a high ended product it still has some ingredients i don’t like. But they like them so i use them as a special treat. I really believe good quality cat food really does keep our kitties healthy. It is so sad how so many brands of cat food are really just “junk food” ?
I’ve been feeding Go! Fit & Free grain-free dry food, chicken/turkey/duck recipe (from Petcurean, a Canadian pet food company) for around ten years. It makes my girls’ coats so soft and shiny—-they always get complimented by the neighbors (my girls get a bit of supervised outdoor time during the summers). I’ve tried other good-quality foods, but very quickly their coats get less soft and more coarse so I always go back to Go! I used to be able to buy it locally but, since moving, I now order it online. One 16# bag lasts for at least 2 months (the two cats share 3/4 cup per day), and I use a LOT less litter, too! I’m lucky that my girls are good about drinking water frequently, so I only feed a bit of wet food occasionally as a treat. (Also, Freyja LOVES raw green beans from the garden or freeze-dried mango; Eurwyn’s weakness is cooked chicken.) Their teeth are in great condition, despite them not letting me brush them. They see the vet once a year and are currently in great health. The only issue is a cataract in Eurwyn’s left eye.

I give my two kitties, Ellie and Julius Caesar, Purina Pro Plan for dry food. It doesn’t matter what flavour, they love that one! They also get wet food. This week it’s Felix As Good As It Looks. They seem to change their minds once in a while on what flavour they like. One week it’s fish and the next week it’s meat! Lots of meows and headbonks to you Monty, Michael and Mikkala x
I just got 2 new kitten in june 2015 they were born in the wild april 27 2015 they are now a year and 5 months these are the pickiest cats I have ever had. I have spent alot of money on food trying different kinds I don’t know what to do I still can’t find a food they will eat they take a few bites and run from it help me please!!
My two 12 year olds Saffy & Bella get both wet & dry in separate bowls. They love Felix pouches fishy flavour. They also get a small amount of Harringtons Salmon flavour dry food. They love the dry food but too much irritates their bladders.
We are trying to switch both cats over to a raw diet. At least partly. They both seem to like the raw food (Rad Cat brand), although they get wet food (try to get the better wet foods), and some kibble and treats. Though I keep threatening to stop the kibble, one kitty was/is suffering with an Upper Respiratory Infection, so while we were giving her antibiotics, I didn’t want her having to deal with food issues too. I also had to locate a more reliable supplier of the raw food, which I HOPE I finally accomplished last week!
Ours get Hills science diet dry kibble and felix senior pouches.
I’ve a 19 year old girl, a 16 year old girl and a 3 year old Tom. He steals everyone’s so he gets senior too, just extra.
They rarely get canned tuna because my vet says salt is bad and mercury too, so only rarely.
I give them a fish finger occasionally cooked with crumb removed.
Girls don’t drink much, but my boy certainly does.
Sardines are meant to be ok in oil. Omega 3 is good for the older girls joints.
I feed my cats wet & dry food, in separate bowls. Everything disappears! Love the photo of Monty’s little tooth and his kissing booth – very, very cute!
My mom and dad feed me Orijen, all protein and natural produced in Canada (even though I live in the US). After much research, they decided this was the best option for me. You can find it on Amazon or your local specialty pet food store.
I was feeding The Honest Kitchen, which is a dehydated raw, but right when I recieved my last case, they stopped eating it. Won’t touch it, won’t even go near the bowls. I don’t know if they changed their formula or if it’s just that last box but I still have this case and don’t know what to do with it and I’m not willing to waste another $248 a month to find out what it is. I have 16 cats and that was such a awesome food but no food is good if they won’t feed it. So right now I am stuck feeding them nine lives canned cat food, chicken pate. I do the chicken and tuna pate once or twice a week but I prefer to stay away from fish. I also don’t do gravy cuts of any sort because usually it’s tapioca or something high in starch that is used as a thickener or binder. All the higher dollar canned cat foods put way too many veggies in their food or there is rice or tapioca. I don’t so much watch the sugars as much as I watch the carbs and phosphorus.
One of our cats had as humans would say Kidney stones, it was from eating wrong food and other things, he had to do dialysis and have them removed, now to keep the stones from coming back we have to feed him a special prescription diet food.. The food is around 5 dollars a pound but it is worth it, He is going on 13 years old.
